Having decided on our goal – the IOW Marathon on 9th October – Deb and I have been strangely excited! We met on on Monday – which was Day 1 of our 14 week training plan – to compare training plans and synchronize our longer runs as much as possible. Although we won’t be able to do many weekday runs together, thankfully many of our Sunday runs will be shared, and we will hopefully have the company of friends Tracy (AKA: “Poley”) and Clayre too, as they have decided to join us in our challenge! Poley did the London Marathon this April, so I expect we will looking to her for additional advice as we progress. Our thinking is that as the event is NOT well supported by spectators, and we will be out in the middle of no-where for many miles without any other humans around, we will train and run together and keep each other going when the running gets tough. This one will be as much mental as physical – with none of the adrenaline-pumping atmosphere or crowds of London or Brighton to push us along.
Day 1 was actually down as a “Rest Day” for us both, so we spent the day planning and setting up a Facebook group for like-minded weirdos, I mean running friends, who want to share some of our long runs. We didn’t actually do any running at all! This marathon training is quite easy…..
Day 2 called for 30 minutes of easy running, which was easily achieved at my Run England running group session (the Love Running Tuesday Nighters), for which I am the Group Leader. A nice big tick went on the calendar, but I know that later weeks call for longer runs on Tuesdays, so I will have to steel myself to do more on my own at the end of the regular session, but with my Husband rallying around I know I can handle this.
Day 3 was the only Wednesday off in the whole plan. I was pleased about this as I had a tough day at work and didn’t feel too special by the end of the day.

Day 4: My first challenge: This was my first proper “Interval Session” in 3 years, and my Husband – together with my very clever TomTom GPS watch – nagged me into running minute long reps of fast running interspersed with 3 minutes of recovery jogging. My usual pace these days is between 10 and 11 minute miles, so running at sub 8 minutes was a bit of a challenge, but wowsers it felt good! The training plan called for 40 minutes of Interval training and I did 42, so another happy tick on the calendar! Deb was doing some hill reps with her son Simon (who may also be tempted to do the marathon) so we’re both happy! I am planning to alternate between intervals and hill training once a week, and I wonder if this could turn into one of the most satisfying work-outs every week? Felt amazing afterwards and so pleased with my efforts 🙂

Hello Jo! Well done you! :-)
Having spent a little time out of the running world due to boring injuries I have signed up for the Isle of Wight Marathon, my first too! Lets face it, I'm not getting any younger, so if I don't do it now, when will I!?! So far my actual training has looked nothing like my training plan as adding swimming and HIIT classes in the mix. I look forward to reading some more of your blogs soon, and will probably see you out running too!
