Jo’s Marathon Blog (week 2 & 3)

How the weeks fly by! So far I feel that my training plan and my lifestyle are dove-tailing very well together, and I haven’t struggled with any of it….. SO FAR!

After an epic Wednesday hill training session in week 2 (on the wicked road that leads to the golf course on St George’s Down!), I was feeling invincible! We did a warm-up followed by 10 second hill sprints with recovery jogs in between each burst, and covered 4 miles in the end. The following day I had a very hilly but beautiful run with the IOW Road Runners and went flying up Nunnery Lane (famed locally for it’s gradient!) as if I ate hills for breakfast! Pride comes before a fall though, and after 3 miles of running strongly I experienced that sensation runners like to describe as “my legs falling off”…. heavy, tired calves and a sudden surfeit of energy. very disappointing. I even cut the last half miles of the run – which in retrospect I felt VERY bad about…. surely pushing yourself beyond the limit is exactly what I need to get used to if I’m to tackle a marathon?

Anyway, my Sunday run made up the shortfall, as I was down to do 8 miles, but took part in a hilly and beautiful trail run we like to do every year from Shide to Ventnor (finishing at the “Spyglass” for much needed nosh and alcohol!). This was actually 11 miles, so I felt pretty smug putting that on my running diary!

WEEK 3: A few days of feeling run-down and headachey marred a few days of this week, and resulted in the ONLY cancellation of a session I have had to make so far.  I made up for it by doing the New Forest 10 on Sunday instead of the 9 miles my plan suggested! This week was also marred by very painful ankles – which I attribute to Sunday’s undulating and stony paths – and the foot in which I tore ligaments last September has been particularly troublesome. Ankle supports are the order of the day until the pain is gone!
