I’ve never “blogged” before, but preparing for my first ever marathon seems a good time to start! Maybe my training, the issues I encounter and the mistakes I will undoubtedly make will help others in the future? Who knows. Maybe no-one will even read this!
The Idea
I blame my friend Coral really. Coral is a awe-inspiring lady who impressed us ALL in 2015 by tackling her first ever marathon, with only a couple of years of social running under her belt compared to my 11! She has since abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower, climbed walls, run lots of other races, been chosen as a Run England “Inspirational Runner” and will shortly be abseiling down England’s highest waterfall!
This is Coral high-fiving her way round the Brighton Marathon in 2015!

Her efforts got many of us slower runners in our Club (the IOW Road Runners) thinking about marathon running, and suddenly seeing it as a possibility rather than a pipe-dream or the realm of the elite runner. Our friend Deb decided that she wanted to do one in her 50th year, and as she is 50 in August I thought “why make her go through that alone?!”. Solidarity amongst slower runners!
I decided on the IOW Marathon because I love the idea of NOT getting up early to catch a ferry to a mainland event, of conquering the distance on home turf, but most of all I love the idea of being able to get home quickly and easily afterwards (in case I am not well, able to walk or in lots of pain!).
My training plan is about to start, so let’s see how it goes!
