Nonsuch parkrun

A very rare weekend off allowed Jo and I the chance to travel to the mainland last weekend, and to run at the Nonsuch Park parkrun on the Surrey/London border.

Being just 10 minutes’ walk from my parents house, we warmed ourselves up with a brisk walk through Nonsuch park, to arrive beside the Mansion House. We’ve attended over 100 Medina I.O.W. parkruns, and as a result we have grown accustomed to knowing everyone there, usually spending all the time pre-run catching up with our extended running family. But it was utterly different last Saturday, as we didn’t know a soul there (until my family arrived en mass a little later!).

Fortunately, Nonsuch parkrun is now 98 runs strong, averaging just over 200 runners every week, and as such we found the event to be a well-oiled machine. Shortly after we had followed other parkrunners, who clearly knew where they were going, to the start/finish area, the race director took charge. He announced that a warm-up was taking place in a few minutes, whilst any first time parkrunners at Nonsuch should have a quick “newbie” briefing. This consisted of outlining the 2-lap course, and explaining what would happen once we finished as regards tokens, our barcodes, scanning and so on. We found the volunteer giving the briefing, as well as all the other Nonsuch volunteers to be helpful and friendly, which made us feel very welcome at this new venue.

My mum and dad to provide vocal support, and my brothers Peter, Andrew and James to run with us. Eldest brother Peter had run 4 parkruns before this one, but all at another location. Younger brother Andrew had already tackled Nonsuch once before, and has done another 30 different parkruns, including our home course – the Island’s very own Medina I.O.W. parkrun. For my youngest brother, James, this was his very first parkrun, and Jo had the pleasure of running with him, and encouraging him along.

The course itself was pretty flat and definitely scenic. We know Nonsuch Park very well, and love going for walks or runs over it when we go visiting my parents. It was a warm morning which made things a little harder than normal, yet the lovely scenery helped to distract from the effort required, and just over 19 minutes from the start, I’d finished this wonderful course. I was happy with a 6th placed finish, given that I didn’t want to go crazy-fast. Andrew finished a respectful 20th place with one of his quicker parkruns for some time, Once we’d finished, Andrew and I ran back to see how the rest of the Randall clan were getting on. It didn’t take us long to come across Peter as he was approaching the finish, and in the process notching up a sub 28 minute time. A little further back in the field we found Jo and James. He was doing particularly well on his first ever parkrun, and it was great to share the last bit of the run with him. Saying that, Jo and I stopped just before the end to help a young lad who was struggling with an asthma attack. Whilst Jo gave him a puff of her inhaler, James managed to storm towards the finish line. Despite Jo putting in a very quick dash, we couldn’t catch James, who finished inside 36 minutes. I have to say that I’m immensely proud of James, as this was his first bit of running away from a treadmill, which makes his time even more remarkable. So the 5 Randalls had finished the Nonsuch parkrun, and all that remained was to pose for a photo or two, then jog back through the park and enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a Saturday off work. Jo and I don’t know when we’ll get to run another mainland parkrun (we barely get to run the Medina I.O.W. parkrun more than every other month as we are always volunteering!), but we loved the experience and can’t wait for the opportunity to occur again!
