Put your running in context

2013 has been a bit topsy-turvy for me.

The year started really well, I felt very healthy and I managed to give my all in every race, clocking up a few PBs on the way.

Then I picked up an injury, the following races were a real struggle, and I haven’t felt quite the same since. I’ve also had a virus in the last couple of weeks, and generally suffered recently.

I’ve got my first race in four months this Sunday, and really didn’t know if I would be ready for it. I’ve barely jogged or run 5 miles in the last fortnight, and my speed and form are out of the window at the moment.

This morning I heard of the passing away of Patrick Skelton. He has been a pivotal figure at the Medina I.O.W. parkrun, our go-to tail runner, who was always there to provide support and encouragement to those who were just beginning to run. He had a wonderful sense of humour and was a true gentleman to boot. Patrick will be missed by everyone at our parkrun community, but I’d like to say a huge thank you for all you did and gave, Patrick.

Suddenly my little blip seems irrelevant. I’ve got to make the most of all I have, and sieze every moment. I’ll now run my race on Sunday. I know it won’t be that fast, and under other circumstances I’d be disappointed with my performance. But this time around it’ll be my way of saying thank you and goodbye, Patrick.
