Week 5 was my most intense week so far. I had Monday as a rest day but ran the rest of the week – clocking up over 30 miles in 6 days for the first time ever!
My Tuesday Group run was supplemented by an additional 1.5 miles on my own afterwards, which started quite normally, but ended up being one of my fastest miles for a long time! Felt pretty epic (and sweaty!!) by the time I reached Simon in Seaclose Park, and was even tempted to join the small group of IOW Road Runners we met there, as they paused before their final 1 mile hill rep… hunger and tiredness won out though! The way I felt that night – elated and really buoyed up by the endorphins racing round my body – really made me appreciate just why we all do this running lark! I have called it “free therapy” for many years, and it truly is just that!
Wednesday was supposed to be a hill rep session for me, but I was pretty tired after a busy day on my feet, and it was so hot still. I managed one hill sprint and the rest of the hill was a slow plod, so to make up for it we added a couple of miles so at least we got some exercise!
Thursday was a bit different as we were unable to get to our IOW Road Runners club night. Instead we drove to Ryde after work and I joined my marathon buddy Deb for a very hilly 6 miler. It was marred by a bit of ankle pain again (brought on after tackling a stony and uneven path at Nettlestone), but we were both pleased to have done the distance.

Friday was a gorgeous and more relaxed 4 miler across Mountjoy and around Carisbrooke Castle in the sunshine with some mates, and was made even more enjoyable by the unexpected appearance of my friend Cathy with a box of fresh melon at one point! Friday runs are always good for the soul, and this one was no exception.
Saturday’s rest day was scrubbed because I was a girl on a mission – I needed to get a dear friend of mine (who only started running this year) around parkrun without mishap (she’d had a bad one the week before and had lost confidence). It was another hot morning but we had a really lovely run together – another 3 miles ticked off!
According to our training programmes, Deb and I had to do 12 miles on Sunday, but it was the day of the St Georges 10 race – one we had both entered. Knowing we would not want to face more miles in the heat of the day after the race, we decided to do a gentle 2 mile warm-up first, and were even joined by a few (crazy) friends! It was a great way to prepare for a race, and I can see why the fast runners do this now! For poor Deb the race itself did not go as well as hoped, but we achieved our goal and there will always be those runs that unexpectedly don’t go so well – it is all part of the learning curve. We are now anticipating next week’s challenges, and have a cunning plan…..
